Ouray’s Ice Festival: A Global Stage for Ice Climbing

Each winter, Ouray transforms into a global hub for ice climbing enthusiasts. The Ouray Ice Festival, now in its 31st year, has grown into the largest ice climbing event in North America, drawing competitors and spectators from around the world.

The festival’s success has significantly boosted Ouray’s economy. Hotels and restaurants that once closed during winter months now remain open to accommodate the influx of visitors. The event showcases the town’s unique ice climbing opportunities, particularly at the Ouray Ice Park, which features over 200 routes and attracts approximately 10,000 climbers annually.

In recent years, the festival has gained international attention. In 2021, a documentary titled “Topping Out!” highlighted the event and was featured on national television, increasing awareness and interest in both the sport and the town. The 2022 festival was live-streamed to over 80 countries, reaching an estimated 200 million households.

However, the festival has faced challenges due to unseasonably warm temperatures affecting ice formation. In 2026, organizers adapted by rebranding the event as the “Ice(less) Festival,” ensuring that the celebration continued despite the weather conditions.

As Ouray celebrates its 150th anniversary, the Ice Festival remains a testament to the town’s resilience and its ability to attract a global audience, solidifying its reputation as the “Switzerland of America.”
