Ouray’s Crystal Reservoir: A Step Toward Local Stewardship

Ouray’s Crystal Reservoir: A Step Toward Local Stewardship

In a significant move for Ouray’s future, U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper have introduced legislation to transfer ownership of the Crystal Reservoir and associated infrastructure from the U.S. Forest Service to the City of Ouray. This proposal encompasses approximately 45 acres, including the Full Moon Dam and Full Moon Ditch.

The transfer would occur at no cost to the city, with Ouray assuming responsibility for repairs, maintenance, and long-term operations. Development on the land would be prohibited, ensuring compliance with Colorado water laws. This initiative aims to enhance local water management, bolster outdoor recreation, and improve wildfire response capabilities.

Ouray Mayor Ethan Funk expressed strong support, emphasizing the reservoir’s historical significance and its role in the community’s water supply and recreation. The legislation has garnered backing from various local entities, including the Towns of Ridgway and Silverton, Ouray and San Juan Counties, and the Ouray County Sheriff.

By assuming stewardship of the Crystal Reservoir, Ouray aims to secure its water resources and preserve a cherished recreational site for future generations.
